Bladder Support Implants, Bioengineered

Definition : Bladder support implants made of bioengineered materials, designed for stabilizing the urethrovesical junction by providing compression of the urethral lumen and support to the urinary bladder. These implants consist of a tissue matrix typically derived from porcine small intestine submucosa (SIS) that has been mechanically separated from the adjoining intestinal layers. SIS consists primarily of acellular collagen, with the original three-dimensional structure of the natural intestinal collagen remaining intact, which is used as a scaffold for urologic tissue growth. Bioengineered bladder support implants are intended for urethral, pubovaginal placement during surgical (e.g., prepubic, transobturator, suprapubic) procedures; some devices are fixed to the posterior pubic bone by sharp-tipped bone anchors.
