Workstations, Stress Exercise

Definition : Workstations designed to process and store digital data and images acquired by monitors and/or recorders used in a stress-exercise laboratory, intended to evaluate the cardiac and/or pulmonary response of a person to physical stress while performing exercise on a treadmill or a bicycle ergometer. These workstations typically obtain the cardiac data (e.g., heart rate, ST-segment trend, arrhythmias) and respiratory function data (e.g., oxygen and carbon dioxide consumption, inspiratory and expiratory volumes) from monitors and recorders. Stress-exercise laboratory workstations typically consist of a high-speed digital computer, high-definition printers, optical/magnetic disks, input and output devices, and processors; they usually follow the instructions of specialized software to create reports that help diagnose and monitor the course of coronary artery and/or pulmonary diseases or to differentiate between them. Stress-exercise workstations are frequently installed as a component of or interact with cardiology information systems and/or cardiology picture archiving and communication systems.
