Definition : Gastrointestinal-tract endoscopes designed to access, examine, diagnose, and/or treat the upper gastrointestinal tract. These devices are used mainly for biopsy, retrieval of foreign objects, and treatment of lesions in all or most of the tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and parts of the small intestine (e.g., the duodenum). These endoscopes are usually inserted through the mouth.
