Information Systems, Telemedicine

Definition : Information systems designed to electronically transmit and receive images and consultative text between remote sites. These systems typically consist of an image-capture station and a receiving station; the image-capture station includes a personal computer (PC) with a high-speed modem, a high-resolution viewing monitor, and an image-capture device, while the receiving station typically consists of a modem, a PC, and a high-resolution image monitor. Telemedicine information systems link hospital departments to other hospitals, physicians' homes, or clinics by means of telephone lines, digital networks, and microwave or satellite transmission; they facilitate rapid diagnosis and consultation by other specialists. The storage capacity of these systems is typically fewer than 1,000 images. Telemedicine information systems do not require the large storage systems and file controllers of picture archiving and communication systems.
