Preserved Blood Components

Definition : Elements of human blood that are preserved and intended for transfusion to treat patients with particular conditions. The blood components are taken from donors' blood that is not be intended for pathology tests. After the addition of appropriate chemicals (e.g., anticoagulants, cell metabolism nutrients) the blood components are preserved and stored (i.e., becoming transfusable blood components), frequently under refrigerated or frozen conditions. The main preserved transfusable blood components are whole blood, red cell (erythrocytes), platelets and plasma but some other blood components such as white blood cells (leukocytes) are also preserved. Preserved blood components are usually stored in blood banks.
