Pacemakers, Cardiac, Implantable, Leadless

Definition : Cardiac pacemakers that provide permanent pacing by using an implantable intracardiac pacemaker pulse generator without leads (i.e., leadless). These implantable pacemakers usually consist of a very small unit including a pulse generator with electronic circuitry that senses the cardiac activity and produces the pacing electrical pulses, a battery, and electrodes. The pacemakers are nonsurgically implanted inside the heart using catheterization procedures usually through a femoral vein and then attached inside the right ventricle. The pacemakers also permit noninvasive reprogramming and/or check of the cardiac conditions and device pacing parameters following implantation. Leadless pacemakers are intended for the permanent treatment of slowed heart rhythms (bradycardia), in certain classes of cardiac arrhythmias, and in other irregular heart rhythms in patients that only need single-chamber ventricular pacing.
