Scanning Systems, Computed Tomography, Peripheral Skeleton

Definition : Computer tomography (CT) scanning systems designed to generate and process cross-sectional images of the peripheral anatomy. These systems consist of an x-ray subsystem (i.e., x-ray generator, x-ray tube, small diameter gantry); a computer subsystem including software for image processing, a monitor with image display, a data storage unit, and an operator console. During a scan, the x-ray beam is moved across the patient's extremity so that the x-ray attenuations along many lines in the tissue slice can be determined and stored. A computerized three-dimensional image reconstruction is then performed. Peripheral quantitative CT (also known as pQCT) scanning systems are usually mobile systems that deliver relatively low doses of radiation. The systems are mainly used for assessment of volumetric bone density in the extremities (e.g., femur, radius, tibia, knee); they may be also used for assessment of bone geometry and muscle parameters in the extremities.
