Monitors, Physiologic, Neonatal/Infant, Telemetric

Definition : Physiologic monitors designed to measure and display in a central station numerical data and/or waveforms of the electrocardiography parameters, the respiratory rate and apnea, and usually two or more of the vital signs (e.g., noninvasive blood pressure, temperature) on newborns and infants through a point-to-point radio link (i.e., telemetric). These monitors typically consist of a main electronic unit with attached sensors placed on the infant's chest (e.g., a belt) to detect chest movements and breathing rate, transducers, and a radio transmitter; the monitor also includes a second unit with a receiver that is integral or associated to a central station in hospitals, or a parent controlled unit at home where the information is displayed. Some monitors can also measure heart rate and/or other respiratory parameters. Telemetric neonatal/infant physiologic monitors usually include audible and visual alarms to alert hazardous episodes. They are used in neonatal intensive care units of hospitals and at home, simpler units intended for parent's infant care are also available.
