Retractors, Surgical, Perineal/Pelvic Wall, Self-Retained

Definition : Retractors with a self-retained mechanism designed to temporarily separate and hold back the edges a pelvic or pelvic floor (i.e., perineum) wall incision, exposing and providing access to the rectum and associated sexual and/or urinary structures. Perineal/pelvic retractors usually consist of a variety of manual instruments, typically consisting of two or three flexible bent swivel blades that may include towel pegs and two scissors-like handles with a ratchet that permit self-retention. Perineal/pelvic wall self-retained retractors are used in surgical procedures involving the rectum, prostate in males, vagina in women, and/or other tissues accessible through a perineal or pelvic incision.
