Dosimeters, Noise

Definition : Dosimeters consisting of specialized sound pressure level meters designed to measure and integrate the noise exposure of a person during a specified period of time (e.g., an eight-hour shift). Noise dosimeters typically include microphones, signal amplifiers, time-integrators, and a display for a limited number of the measured and/or pre-established parameters; the dosimeters are small enough to be worn as a badge. The recorded sound levels may be read later on the display of the instrument or using a computer for a complete processing of the recorded noise values. The recoded average and peak sound levels are used to monitor compliance with occupational sound exposure regulations.
