Apheresis Units, Blood Donor, Red Blood Cell

Definition : Apheresis units designed to automate the separation and collection of red blood cells (RBC) from a healthy blood donor. Typically, RBCs (i.e., erythrocytes) are collected and the rest of the blood with additional volume replacement (e.g., saline solution) is automatically reinfused; with the use of automated methods, large quantities of RBCs (e.g., two units) can be obtained from a single donor. Blood donor RBC apheresis units usually consist of a disposable pheresis set (i.e., a tubing set that connects the patient to the apheresis unit), pumps (e.g., rotary peristaltic pumps), a centrifugation chamber, bowls, filters, clamps, controls (e.g., centrifuge and pump speed, volume of solution added), alarms, and bubble detectors. Red cell apheresis separates red cells and plasma while blood is being drawn rather than blood donations where blood components are separated later in the process. Some units are portable and appropriate for use in the field.
