Information Systems

Definition : Computerized systems designed to receive, analyze, display, and distribute information within one healthcare facility or among many healthcare facilities. Some systems are manufactured and configured with hardware and software that are appropriate for hospital clinical and/or administrative data management, either hospitalwide or for a particular department or specialty; other systems (e.g., telemedicine systems) include capabilities to send or receive information to or from remote locations, rather than use of local or wide area networks (LAN and WAN, respectively). A third type of information system, typically used in big hospitals, have higher (in the order of terabytes) image storage and retrieval capabilities; this type is known as picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).
