Video Systems, Fluoroscopic

Definition : Video systems designed to display the output of the image intensifier of fluoroscopic systems, with appropriate preservation of image sharpness and contrast and minimum lag. These systems typically consist of a video camera optically coupled to the output phosphor of the image intensifier of the fluoroscopic system, one or more standard or high-definition cathode ray tube monitors, and video signal recording devices (e.g., VHS or super-VHS videotape recorders, digital recorders). Video cameras used for general fluoroscopy typically include a conventional tube that operates based on the principle of photoconductivity (e.g., a vidicon tube); for fast motion studies and/or when a series of sequential images are needed (e.g., in angiography studies), tubes with better contrast preservation and less lag (e.g., Plumbicon, Saticon) are used. Solid-state cameras with charge-coupled devices (CCDs) instead of electron tubes are also used. Video systems for fluoroscopy allow fluoroscopic images to be viewed on video monitors inside the examination room and in remote locations
