Pass-Throughs, Enclosed

Definition : Pass-throughs consisting of an enclosed, chamberlike plastic or metallic structure and that include doors on two (usually opposite) sides to permit access from two contiguous rooms isolating one from the other. These pass-throughs are usually mounted either in a wall common to both rooms or on the floor. Mounting brackets and other appropriate hardware are usually supplied with each cabinet model. Enclosed pass-throughs are usually constructed with interlocks that permit only one door to be open at a time, preventing the passage of air, light, humidity, radiation, or other environmental agent. They are typically used in healthcare facilities to pass samples from the patient room to the clinical laboratory; to pass objects and/or personnel from contaminated areas to environmental clean rooms; and to transfer x-ray film cassettes into and out of the dark room.
