Ophthalmoscopes, Direct

Definition : Handheld ophthalmoscopes designed for examining the eye (mostly the back of the eye, the fundus) by providing a noninverted image of the eye. The instruments usually consist of a light source to project the light into the eye through the pupil, a mirror, and a wheel of lenses of varying strength to provide a magnified view of the eye and to adjust the focus of the view. They produce an upright, or unreversed, magnified image of the eye, at approximately 15 times magnification. Direct ophthalmoscopes are used mainly to detect eye conditions or eye diseases.
