Heart-Lung Bypass Unit Tubing Sets

Definition : Tubing sets designed for external delivery of blood from the patient's circulatory system to a heart-lung bypass unit and back. Blood is diverted from the vena cava through a cannula into the tubing set to an arterial pump that is part of the heart-lung bypass unit; after oxygenation the blood is pumped back through the tubing set to a cannula inserted in the aorta, bypassing the heart and lungs. These tubing sets typically consist of plastic, pre-sterilized, disposable plastic tubes manufactured and assembled for this specific use.
