Dilators, Surgical, Biliary/Common Duct

Definition : Surgical dilators designed for mechanically augmenting the diameter (caliber) of the biliary ducts, including the cystic (i.e., gallbladder) and biliary common ducts during surgery. These surgical dilators typically consist of an elliptical head instrument attached to a thin shaft facilitating placement and in some occasions, displacement of tissue near angled surfaces; dilators with several different diameters of dilator heads are available. Biliary/common duct dilators are usually used in exploring the common duct and gall bladder ducts; flexible dilators placed over guiding catheters are sometimes used during laparoscopic procedures. Some dedicated dilators are used in percutaneous procedures intended for reopening obstructed biliary ducts.
