Dilators, Rectal

Definition : Dilators designed for mechanically augmenting the diameter of the rectum. These dilators usually consist of a hard plastic tube-shaped instrument with a small hole on the tip to prevent pressure build up. Rectal dilators are available in a variety of lengths and diameters. They are typically used to dilate the anal sphincter and canal when the size of the anal opening may interfere with its function or the passage of an examining instrument, as well as to prevent the canal from narrowing after surgery.
