Aspirators, Gastric

Definition : Aspirators designed to evacuate gastric secretions and toxic solutions (e.g., poison, overdosed medications) from the stomach by means of an intermittent vacuum suction. These devices usually consist of a lined-powered vacuum pump with user-selectable vacuum settings (e.g., as low as 60 mm Hg and as high as 120 mm Hg), a regulator and gauge, a collection bottle or canister, plastic tubes connecting the components to each other, overflow protection and/or bacteria filter, and/or the suction tubing. The vacuums frequently use the thermotic principle of alternately expanding the air upon heating and contracting the air upon cooling.
